Part 1: The Game

Level & Learning Outcomes

Inspired by the reading about active listening games, we have created a game in which the goal is to practice present continuous through TPR and active listening skills.

Materials needed

  • None

Object of Game

To stay focused so you can do one thing as say something else.

Rules of Play

Before the game starts, the students have to form a circle. The game is broken down into three rounds in which the players perform one after the other. In each round, each player has to say the sentence “I look like this when I’m…” and end it with a verb in the present continuous form.

In Round 1, while saying the sentence, the player has to perform the activity described.

In the next two rounds, the players describe one activity, but perform a different one. In Round 2, each player describes the action of the previous player while acting out their own activity. In Round 3, each player does what the previous player described but describes a new activity.

Scorekeeping: Everyone's a winner 😊

Part 2: Reflection

In my opinion, the game went well. The participants were focused and paid attention to each other and the rules. This game is excellent for filling up extra time and I was happy that the others mentioned beneficial aspects of this game that I hadn’t thought of before (eg. how this game helps them to pay attention to what the others say because students have to do the same during an oral exam).  FG

I think the game was really fun and I quite enjoyed it. I like how flexible it is and what I also think is really important is that it makes students move, which could be really helpful during long days. MB
