Rules of play
The teacher divides the class into 4 groups. The selection of the groups is coincidental. Four pictures about idioms are printed and each student gets a piece of paper with the matching idioms. Students have to match their idioms with the pictures.
The teacher reads out loud an idiom. If a group knows the meaning they have to write down their guess and put it on an envelope and hand it to the teacher. If they don’t answer in the first round, they watch a video in which the idiom is used in context. The same process applies again with giving answers in. Lastly, those groups who didn’t hand in their answers in the first two rounds get to see a picture about literal meaning. The correct definition is given to the students after all groups handed in their envelopes.
Scorekeeping
5 points: correct answer handed in in the first round
3 points: correct answer handed in the second round
1 point: correct answer handed in the third round
Part 2: Reflection
In my opinion the is a rather fun way to approach the teaching of idioms. The players enjoyed it from what I have seen, although there were some issues that could and should be corrected. Firstly, the technical difficulties. Secondly, the approach and the clues could be better. Maybe it should start with the videos and then move on to the picture clues and the idiom itself. (MB)
In my opinion, the game went well. However, the role of the envelopes should be reconsidered, and the videos should be longer for more context in order to exploit them as clues for meaning. (FG)
