Part 1: The Game

Level and Learning Outcomes

students will practice discriminative listening and comprehensive listening in which they decode and use messages in order to get the correct word. Critical listening can be used as well, when the explainer gives more complicated description of the words.

Objective Enhance vocabulary retention and teamwork skills through collaborative learning.

Materials Needed

  • Vocabulary cards

Object of the game: collect the most points.

Rules of Play

  1. Divide the class into teams of three members each.
  2. Assign each team member a specific role
  • Storyteller: Responsible for writing a correct sentence with the guessed word.
  • Guesser: Responsible for guessing the correct word based on the definition.
  • Explainer: Responsible for explaining the word to the Guesser without directly saying the word
3. Begin the exercise
  • Shuffle the vocabulary cards and place them face down in a pile
  • The Reader chooses one card and defines the word aloud to their team. The Guesser tries to find out the word based on the clues provided and writes down the guessed word. If the word is guessed correctly within a specified time limit (40 seconds), the team earns a point. Then the storyteller has to write one sentence with that particular word in 40 seconds and in this way students can put it into practice . If they write a correct sentence they get 1 more point.
  • Rotate roles within the team for the next round
4. The team with the highest number of points wins.

 Scorekeeping

Guessing the word: 1 point

Writing a correct sentence: 1 point

Part 2 Reflection

In my opinion, students enjoyed this game and they it found useful. There were stressful moments, when they didn’t know that particular word, but in general there was a great atmosphere during the game. As for us, we should have thought more about the task of storyteller, because for beginners maybe it is enough to write only one sentence with that word, but in an advanced level it wouldn’t be enough. Our first aim was to give them opportunity to use the words in practise as well. Moreover, we hadn’t thought about the points, because there were cases when the students didn’t tell grammitacally correct sentences and we gave them the point, because she made a sentence, altough it was not correct. In my opinion, these 2 aspects should be developed in the future if we want to use this game.
