Word Relay Adventure ( Listening and B2Vocabulary)
Word Relay Adventure - Sleeping Habits
Gergő Német
Part 1: The Game
Level & Learning Outcomes
The goal of the game is to reinforce vocabulary learning, encourage speaking and listening skills in English related to the topic of sleeping
Students were already at B2 level of English and through this game they could practice sleeping related vocabulary, speaking and listening skills.
Materials needed
Flashcards with words (if you want you can include images) related to the vocabulary set of sleeping habits. (See Appendix for word list)
Timer or stopwatch.
Object of Game
To get the most points by team until every student evoked a certain element of vocabulary and the vocabulary of the topic has been exploited.
Rules of Play
Divide the students into two teams.
Choose a starting team.
Display one flashcard with a word (or show an image which represents the word) .
The first student from the starting team has to say a sentence using the word within 10 seconds. If the word is “sleeping pill”, the student has to say a sentence like this: “The lady took a sleeping pill because she couldn’t sleep.”
The next team, if the sentence was said within the time frame, has their turn and has to come up with a sentence using the last word of the previous sentence.
The game continues in this manner, with each team building on the previous sentence, until a team fails to come up with a sentence within the time limit.
If a team fails, the opposing team earns a point and a new round begins with a new word.
Continue playing until all students have had several turns or until each student has added to the class narrative.
Scorekeeping
After using a certain newly learnt vocabulary item in the sentences, the score gradually adds up. The group who wins the turn can count a point for each and every vocabulary item treated in class pronounced in a given turn.
Part 2: Reflection
During gameplay, I noticed several positive outcomes among my students. Firstly, the competitive element of the game sparked enthusiasm and engagement. They were motivated to contribute to their team’s success, which resulted in an active participation in speaking English. As the class was on Monday morning, they could easily relate to the topic, still recovering from getting up early.
Secondly, the requirement to construct sentences made it easier to get into the context and encouraged them to use the vocabulary treated in class, promoting a better and deeper understanding of the topic. In addition to that, the nature of the game fostered cooperation, teamwork and communication skills, as students collaborated to construct an almost realistic tale on the topic. In conclusion, “Word Relay Adventure” proved to be an effective and enjoyable way to reinforce vocabulary learning and language skills in my classroom. I would recommend this game for teachers who would like to use this game as an entertaining way to practice vocabulary, speaking and listening skills while promoting active participation and the importance of collaboration and teamwork.
